The top 10 commonly accepted benefits of a regular massage
When people discover the joy and benefits of a good massage, they often ask themselves — "How often should I do this?" or "Am I being indulgent wanting to do this every week"?
The answers might be, provided you have a capable and experienced massage provider who isn't likely to injure you, "as often as you can afford the time and money", and "No, massage is not an indulgence, though it can feel like one!"
How good for you is massage?
Massage will:
- Ease Pain - The benefits of massage have often been cited to be comparable to those reported for other effective treatments: medications, acupuncture, exercise and yoga. Massage has also been linked to decreased stiffness and pain, as well as better range of motion in people with osteoarthritis.
- Improve Sleep- If you've ever dozed off on a massage table, you don't need to be convinced that a massage can promote healthy sleep.
- Improve Immunity - Many studies have linked massage to better functioning of the immune system.
- Address PMS Symptoms - Anecdotally, many find that massage can beat PMS symptoms, like bloating and mood swings.
- Raise Alertness - Research has demonstrated that adults who were given as little as a 15-minute chair massage had measurably more alert and completed a series of math questions faster with higher accuracy.
- Address Acute and Chronic Headaches - Just like muscle and back pain, headaches including migraine can also be alleviated thanks to massage.
- Makes you prettier! - Massage increases blood flow, which plumps up slack skin, encourages lymphatic drainage (the shuttling of toxins out and away from cells so that more nutrients can travel in) and adds vitality to a dull complexion.
- Reduce the symptoms of illness - Various studies have shown that massage can relieve fatigue, pain, anxiety, depression and nausea in patients of all types.
- Complementary to Meditation - The act of laying down and focusing on the strokes across one's skin, being 'in the moment' is consistent with the teachings of meditation. Don't use a massage as a time for conscious thought, instead, allow the relaxation to take you where it takes you for the maximum benefit.
- It feels good!
This information is provided as a list of generic benefits that have been identified by researchers and anecdotally and does not constitute medical advice nor a promise that any particular service will provide any particular benefits in any individual circumstance. Sad that we have state the obvious, but it's a litigious world.

Top 10 tips for getting the most out of your massage
Here are some tips for helping you get the most value from your massage. #10 is the most important.
- Don't be rushed.
If you have an appointment, arrive early. If you just walk in, don't be in a hurry to leave. - Don't be too cheap. A 30 minute massage can be great in the right hands, but at $60-70/hour, a massage is so cheap anyway why would you go to the effort of going there and cut the experience short?
$70/hour may sound a lot, but do you have any idea what your mechanic is actually charging as an hourly rate? About double that, and he is getting that for 8 hours each day. Masseuses can have a lot of downtime waiting for customers. - Tell the masseuse what you want. The first advice is whether you want therapy or relaxation. From there you can be specific about particular requirements. My normal patter goes something like: "I want a relaxing massage including my feet and finishing with a head massage, but my neck is always stiff so could you please give it a little treatment".
Of course the more you want covered, the longer you need to allow to ensure it all gets done properly. A good head massage is 7-10 minutes, a foot massage is 5 minutes minimum per foot each, so if you also want a full body massage this will require a full hour service. - Tell the masseuses about injuries. If you have any injuries - let them know whether you want it treated or left alone.
- Don't be TOO polite. Don't be shy to ask for the music to be turned down, or air conditioning to be adjusted.
- Small talk is ok. Research shows that the majority of customers enjoy some communication with the practitioner, at least in the early part of a session. It helps build a rapport that translates into the customer feeling comfortable with the masseuse, and the masseuse feels that they are not just a servant. While you will inevitably become less chatty as your body relaxes, don't hesitate to give the masseuse feedback about what feels good, or if there is pain / discomfort. I once had a foot massage in Singapore that was incredibly painful and despite my grimaces and advice that it was too hard, the masseur soldiered on until I had to stop him and ask for another masseur. Such occurrences are rare, but the only chance to fix a bad or unsuitable massage is while it's happening.
- Complain quickly. If you ARE having a bad experience, give the business the opportunity to rectify it, rather than enduring it then rushing off to give them a smack-down review. Any decent business will seek to make amends for a win-win situation. Occasionally a business will give you a trainee who doesn't yet have a full range of skills. If this becomes evident and you want an experienced masseuse, then say so before it's too late.
- Be aware of personal hygiene.
- The only valid critic is a balanced critic. Be as generous with online compliments as your are with criticisms. If you've had a great service, find the business online and leave a positive review. Most review sites require an account, but make the effort to create at least one account somewhere like TrueLocal, StartLocal, Yelp. Many businesses also have a 'Google My Business' page where reviews can be left after logging in with your Google account.
- Massage is ME TIME.
A massage session is NOT the time to be performing mental arithmetic, going over the fight you had this morning with your partner, or worrying about that upcoming prostate inspection. Focus on the touch of the practitioner, your breathing, how nice it feels to be indulging in something totally focused on your personal well-being. If you need some quiet time to contemplate other issues, make separate time to focus on those. If you are thinking about your schedule / responsibilities / customers during a massage you'll end up thinking of things you want to write down, then you'll start worrying that you'll forget it, then all that calm is lost.
FOCUS on SELF!

August 2020
Wow, the COVID-19 crisis remains with us and despite the easing of restrictions, many shops are reporting that things are quiet. Probably a combination and people saving their money due to job insecurity, and concerns about the virus.
To this end, Asian Massage Sydney is working with our shops to employ COVID-Safe processes to give customers an assurance that all possible precautions are in place. As we are confident that each shop has earnt a COVID-Safe label, we will add the logo to their web page. Please be patient as we work through this, and in the meantime, ask the shop what they are doing when you make an appointment.
November 2019

February 2019
Well the heat is not over yet, but most of our featured shops have air conditioning so you can escape the discomfort with a massage instead of going to the shops or the movies, fighting for a parking space! Ashfield Narsha Massage & Spa has joined us for 2019, a new shop with very well-presented masseuses who are keen to meet you. Don't confuse the shop with the Thai shop on the corner, Narsha is next door with the pretty girl on the window.
We know of a shop for sale in Stanmore, check out the massage business for sale page if you are interested.

August 2018
A long winter nearly over and many shops are looking forward to spring when a young man's thoughts turn to....masseuses! Brand new shops are open now in Burwood (Burwood Health Massage), in the CBD (Sun City on Sussex Street) and we welcome Tuk Tuk Thai Massage in Matraville.
April 2018
The big news this month is the demise of the popular classified website Cracker / backpage. While they were price gouging over the last few years, jacking up prices without any significant improvement in the features of the site, the outpouring of concern since they disappeared shows how significant they were.
December 2017
Having a massage in this heat doesn't really come to mind does it, but if the shop is air conditioned, and especially if you can have a shower before, then don't be put off! Many of our clinics have such facilities, so check out our directory and choose wisely!
November 2017

Happy Birthday to Us - Yes, Asian Massage Sydney is 5 years old this month. From just one customer at North Ryde we have grown to become one of the most respected massage directories in Sydney for our up to date information, great photos and volume of page views. If you know of a great massage shop that should be on our list, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. We will not add you to any mailing lists, nor send you advertising junk. We hate that shit too!
So, how do you feel about our new menu? The site got too large to keep listing every suburb, so we'd had to group the regions like we always have with the CBD. You may note that outside the CBD, we have only one shop in each suburb - this is one of the things that makes Asian Massage Sydney unique - our loyalty and focus to customers, and bringing the best information and photos to our readers.
If you wish to make a comment on the new menu or the site in general, click this button.
August 2017
NEW SHOP OPENS THIS WEEKEND - from FRIDAY 19 AUGUST
Another very comfortable shop opened this month in Seven Hills and Asian Massage Sydney were on the spot to take some photos of this spacious and nicely styled clinic at 14 Artillery Road. With plenty of parking front and rear, experienced management and a warm shower, they are sure to succeed.
Site News - Ongoing growth meant our directory menu (see below) was getting too large, so we've reorganised it by region with drop-down selections. This will make it easier to navigate both on a pc and mobile, and to find a clinic in the area close to you.

July 2017
Big news in the CBD this month is that Bamboo Massage, a highly popular clinic in the World Square Building has relocated to 651 George Street in the Haymarket. This address has been the sister business to Bamboo for some time and known as Bamboo 2. The new business at 651 has celebrated with some renovations and will now be known simply as Bamboo Massage. Old and new customers are welcome to check out the new premises.
June 2017

Top 10 tips for masseuses and business managers
Some suggestions to masseuses for staying in touch with what their customers expect of them.
- Ask meaningful questions about the customer's requirements.
Our research has shown that people want to be asked more than the standard 'do you want hard, medium or soft' question. You should enquire about injuries or pain points, determine if they are to be treated or avoided, and then ask what the customer DOES want. That is, why did they come to see you? - Ensure the room temperature is comfortable. You've been in the room all day and have acclimatised, but the customer has just come in from the hot / cold / rain and may need the room environment altered for their comfort. Ask the customer if the room temperature is comfortable, and give them the opportunity to request a change, even temporarily until they cool down / warm up etc.
- Music should support not overpower the massage experience. The music is there for ambience, not to disturb the peace. Also, make sure the soundtrack is long enough not to start to repeat before the session is over. A good selection of music will begin when the massage begins and wind down when the massage ends, subtly signalling to the customer that the experience is coming to an end, and then help them to become more alert.
- Chat with the customer, but know when to tail off. Surveys of massage customers show that they like to have a rapport with their masseuse; talk about the weekend, their job, the tennis etc. But there comes a point when the relaxation kicks in and people just need to chill without making conversation. Recognise that point and let the customer enjoy your touch.
- Have fresh massage table linen. The table must be and look fresh for every customer. Get rid of those floral cover sheets that look like grandma used them in the 1940s.
- Use scents sparingly but strategically. Some massage clinics gets the aroma part of the therapy just right - the minute you enter the building you sense it - subtle yet distinctive, a reminder of the great experiences of the past and the one about to come. Don't use fragrant massage oil - the customer's partner will detect it the minute he gets home and ask potentially embarrassing questions.
- If your business has a shower, don't keep the towels until they are old and crusty. You don't need to buy the most expensive, and they can serve as bathmats when old. Don't use the bathroom as a laundry / store room / cupboard. Make it an inviting part of the experience, and keep the shampoo topped up, the exhaust fan free of dust, and the mould off the tiles.
- Address a complaint immediately. If a customer is unhappy and you can't placate them, escalate the matter to the manager quickly and show empathy for the customer's position. A well managed situation can consolidate a customer relationship, engendering even more loyalty.
- Be aware of personal hygiene, your own! Be conscious that your lunch of garlic broccoli, curried egg or fish stew may permeate the room and add an unwanted aroma to that therapy!
- Offer a glass or two of luke-warm water after the massage. The release of toxins during a massage can often lead to a headache - not what you want your customer to remember you by. A glass, preferably two, of body-temperature water after the massage helps to hydrate the body and pass the toxins.
Focus on the customer's experience and they'll return!

Web Marvels - Terms and Conditions
We offer to promote your business through various internet forums. We will do so with integrity and a focus on representing your business professionally. Before engaging Web Marvels to provide professional services to you, please note these terms and conditions of sale of our service.
- As so much is beyond our control, we offer no guarantees of any particular rankings achievements. We can however point to our record of success as an indicator of likely future performance.
- A small number of search terms will be agreed and our content will be built around building web rankings for these terms.
- We will not publish a competitor in the same suburb as you on Asian Massage Sydney without your permission. An exception to this is the Sydney CBD where we will limit the proximity to a competitor to a reasonable distance, and provide additional content to ensure appropriate coverage.
- The copyright of photographs used by Web Marvels resides with the photographer. If we take a photo, we own it and retain rights over its use. If you take it you own it. In either case, if a photo is taken by you or on your premises and it is identifiably your business or staff, you may request that it not be used further by Web Marvels and this request will be granted by Web Marvels.
In return, it is a requirement that our customers meet their commercial obligations to us in a timely fashion.
- Invoices are issued for payment for services 3 months in advance.
- No refunds are provided on 'unused' portions on the sale of a business, however the new owner will not be invoiced until the next billing period.
- Customers are asked to sign an agreement setting out the terms and conditions of the agreement as per this information, or to agree by return email. The agreement persists until terminated by either party. During the first 12 months of the agreement, termination may be effected immediately. After 12 months, one month's notice to terminate is required.
- Payment terms are 7 days from date of invoice with payment by bank deposit, else by direct debit on the 1st of each month.
- Complaints shall be made verbally in the first instance, and if requested, in writing. (We've never had one yet!)
- Your other advertisers are not permitted to use photographs taken by Web Marvels without specific permission for each specific image or portion thereof. Such permission will be granted only in rare circumstances. The taking of photographs is an investment in time and skill development, and is an asset of Web Marvels that we are not prepared to share lightly. We don't want our site looking like other sites, and we don't want their's looking like ours!
- Web Marvels and its author own the intellectual property of all content produced on behalf of customers. Customers or former customers may not reproduce this material in any form or forum without written consent and the payment where applicable of a licence fee. Essentially - if you discontinue the service, you can't copy our work and use it elsewhere - this will be an infringement of copyright and we will be entitled to pursue enforcement of our rights. We are flattered by such respect for our work, but flattery doesn't pay the bills, and the advertiser passing off our work as his should not be charging you for doing so!
- Web Marvels reserves the right to alter these terms and conditions periodically, any major changes will be notified.

How much does a massage cost?
Here we are in 2025, and the cost of massage has remained steady again this past year, with most clinics now charging $40 for half an hour and $65-$75 for the hour. Discounting in areas of high competition like Stanmore, Pyrmont and Haymarket/Chinatown does occur occasionally. Traditional Thai massage can tend to cost a little more. The sluggish economy has kept a lid on prices and provided a steady supply of practitioners maintaining the competition. There has however been a shift towards larger and more upmarket clinics, particularly in Traditional Thai Massage, to challenge the small suburban practices. The Sydney CBD now has massage clinics the way it used to have pubs, and this competition keeps prices down despite the high CBD rents.

Some clinics have small discounts for their particular quiet times such as weekends, and many have a loyalty scheme offering your 10th massage free for example. Note that some of these schemes require the massages to be taken within a time-frame of as little as 3 months, so read the fine-print! There are also specials to be found for 4 hand massage at some clinics, see our specials page here.
Some clinics who consider they offer more experienced masseuses, fresh linen (rather than disposables) and upmarket premises etc will be at the higher end of the price scale, charging $70-$80 for the hour. More exotic treatments such as Hot Oil, Hot Stone, Aromatherapy or Body Scrub will cost between $80 and $100 per hour.
There continue to be a few Thai clinics advertising $49 / hour specials. These prices are to compete with the coupon deals that are around with the hope that you can be talked up into a more expensive service, and also that you become a regular at that higher rate. They can't make much money at that rate, and if they don't make a profit, they won't be in business. Enough said! We observe that the coupon frenzy has well and truly passed as people found the conditions were onerous and appointment times inconvenient. If it sounds too good to be true.....
Is it worth the extra?
The only sensible answer is try a specialty service like Hot Stone and make up your own mind. Some people tend to have standard massage as often as time permits and upgrade every few months for a treat. If you have massage only infrequently, then we'd recommend pay the extra and you won't regret it. If you can afford it every time, then do it!
In our experience, you get what you pay for. Businesses who charge more won't survive if they don't deliver the promise of a superior service, so they try extra hard to win you as a regular customer. These are the places we like to visit!
Should I tip the masseuse?
Tipping is not expected. If however, you consider your therapist has provided a particularly thorough or special service, a modest consideration is hugely appreciated. Typically, masseuses are not salaried but paid per customer only, so while a 50:50 house/therapist split of $30/hour each may sound good as an hourly rate, bear in mind that a therapist will be unlikely to have back to back customers, and will have to be at work for 10 hours to earn say 6 hours pay!
If you are worried about setting a precedent with a therapist you see regularly, then you can simply comment that "today was particularly good, and I'd like to say thank you".
Our view? If you had a really good massage, being generous will make you feel even better!

Web Presence - Marvellous results for your business
Web Presence aims to 'sell the empty seats' to help service-orientated businesses operate to their full capacity, and then to grow further.
Idle staff are costly, and effective use of capacity also helps keeps valued employees. What we don't do is encourage you to sell the empty seats at half price to disloyal bargain hunting coupon shoppers! We aim to attract customers who will respect your skills, pay for value, and return for service.
What is our approach?
We use our skills and experience in web marketing and business development to draw the web enquiries for the services you offer to you rather than a competitor. We achieve this through:
- A well-crafted web site, brief but rich in vital information and imagery.
- Development of complementary online content to cast a wide net and deliver more enquiries and customers to your door.
- Integrity - we only promote businesses we have got to know and can vouch for the stated quality. Further, we don't promote identical businesses in the same suburb without customer approval.
- Support and advice for other advertising initiatives promotions - loyalty cards, pay per click, special offers.
- Specialised business consulting advice - relating to strategic, HR and competition issues.
- Where applicable, social media and complementary paid advertising is used to enhance a business' reputation and visibility.
- Low risk terms - we back our performance to deliver business growth to our customers or we don't get paid.
We are not university student or Indian web developers, we are practised Australian business managers offering business consulting services to give your business the benefit of our experience.

Top 10 Common Styles of Relaxation and Therapeutic Massage
A glossary of the terms you will see in describing massage services
1. Traditional Chinese Massage - there are two types of traditional Chinese massage - Tui na and Zhi Ya. Tui na employs pushing, stretching and kneading of the muscle. This is the more commonly available style in Western countries, and 'Tui na' is occasionally displayed in advertising by the most authentic of practitioners to identify their particular style. The Zhi Ya style focuses on pressing and pinching at acupressure points. Both are based on principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine.
2. Traditional Thai Massage - an interactive manipulation of the body using passive stretching and gentle pressure with the hands and occasionally feet. Thai massage also includes compressions and stretches. Thai Massage requires participation on behalf of the customer - you don't just lie there. The therapist moves and stretches you into a sequence of postures, akin to yoga without doing all the work! As a consequence, Thai massage can be more energising than other forms of massage, improving flexibility and range of motion.
3. Aromatherapy - the use of aromatic plant oils, including essential oils for psychological and physical well-being.
What is an 'essential oil'? The term is derived from ancient beliefs about the components of matter, the quintessential component being the spirit or 'life force'. This concept has been applied loosely to extracting the perceived spirits of plants, typically using distillation processes to retain the aromatic and purported healing properties.
4. Reflexology - based on the principle that congestion of tension in any part of the foot is a mirror to the same in a corresponding part of the body. Reflexology is very relaxing, especially for people who stand on their feet all day or just have tired, achy feet. In practice, you don't need a qualified reflexologist to get a lot of satisfaction out of a good foot massage. It can however be painful so don't be shy in asking for a little less firmness if it becomes too uncomfortable. It will probably do you good to grin and bear it, but it does need to be enjoyable too.
5. Swedish Massage - a system of long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and shaking motions that apply pressure between muscles and bones. This is a gentle style of massage, hence mainly used for relaxation.
6. Hot Stone Massage - smooth heated stones are placed on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles. Hot stone massage is ideal for people with muscle tension but prefer lighter massage. This is a specialty service and not offered by most clinics.
7. Sports Massage - typically conducted by a masseur attached to a gym or sports club, and focused on the treatment of a chronic or acute injury. Can be quite robust, but hey, no pain no gain!
8. Shiatsu - a form of Japanese treatment that uses localised finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians. Each point is held for two to eight seconds to allegedly improve the flow of energy and help the body regain balance. People are normally pleasantly surprised when they try shiatsu for the first time. It is relaxing yet the pressure is firm, and there is usually no soreness afterwards.
9. Pregnancy Massage - also called prenatal massage, pregnancy massage should only be conducted by Massage therapists who are demonstrably certified (with evidence) in pregnancy massage and who know the proper way to position and support the woman's body during the massage. Pregnancy massage is used to reduce stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pains, and reduce anxiety and depression.
PLEASE NOTE: There are no pregnancy massage certified practitioners amongst the therapists promoted on this site, and while we encourage massage as part of a healthy lifestyle, we recommend you seek a specialist for this type of service to ensure the well-being of both the mother and her precious cargo.
10. Bowen Technique - an Australian developed technique involving gentle rolling movements over muscles and tendons to stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms. Originally intended to help people suffering from muscular-skeletal problems, it has also been successful with many other conditions, including asthma and respiratory ailments in children and pre-teens. Similarly to pregnancy massage - this is a specialist treatment requiring a practitioner qualified in this particular field.
